The European Model Worth Emulating The United States

In your estimation, could self -regulation be effective in protecting data privacy or does it need to be supplemented by laws and regulations? Is the European model worth emulating in the United States? In my estimation I think that the self-regulation need to be added by laws, because it is built on a pure-market model to preserve consumer privacy, consumer confidence, and raise business’ owner revenues. However, it is uncertain whether the competitive market model, utilized as an argument in favor of industry self-regulation, is applicable, due to the fact that, some consumers lack of basic understanding of Internet privacy. I don’t think it benefit for businesses to protect their privacy, if consumers do not understand the basics of†¦show more content†¦European consumers have the authority to sue companies that don t follow the practices of these regulations. Importance of Information Technology in Retail - myassignmenthelp

Question: Discuss about theImportance of Information Technology in Retail for ICT. Answer: Introduction: The assignment discusses the advantages of information and communication technology (ICT) in todays world and the substantial changes brought by ICT in retail business of Australia. The chosen organization for this assignment is stelly, situated in New South Wales, Australia. The chief aim of this assignment is to discuss why the chosen boutique needs to understand the importance of using technology in order to cope with this digitalized world. Discussion: Stelly has been producing fashionable outfits for the ever-changing Australian lifestyle since 2005. As the website of the store says,Stelly has outlets in fourdifferent locations acrossAustralia. The store specializes on women apparels. They have specialty fashion group who continue experimenting and offer fresh and unique fashion. After spending successful years in this sector, Stelly Onlinewasborn. A company is not accepted competitive if it does not have website. According to the experts, the capability to integrate online and offline sales helps the sellers to offer more products and meet the customers exact requirement (Blzquez 2014). As more people spend as much time on the internet, the retailers much understand the importance of sales channel integration (Doric Primorac and Kozina 2016). The traditional way of shopping enables the buyers to see, feel and try the product before buying. There is no need for queuing in front of the trial rooms. In online retailing, the purchase is much simpler and faster. In offline stores the factors bothering the sale is not only the quality of the product but the staff and the ambience of the store, while in digital era the factors concerned are transparency, service, diverse choice and obviously brand name associated with the product. Online business can reduce the cost of the retail store, as it needs fewer staff with no particular working hours. The consumers do not need to stand on queue before the cash counter. In online services, the customers can evaluate and review a product, which helps the seller to take care of the quality and understand the trend or requirement of the buyer. This can never be possible in offline business where the customers discontinue without giving any feedback. Online shopping is always time saving. The online website has the price comparison option that manipulates purchase decision also saves money and time. Product price is the main decision maker of online purchasing. Online shopping offers affordable prices as the cost of maintain a shop is absent. The question of security and privacy of personal information always remains in case of online business but the buyer can opt for cash on delivery option just like a bricks and mortar store. The delivery or shipping charge has replaced the cost of physical visiting to the stores. Many online stores offer free shipping option in order to attract and retain customers. The survey in Australia has revealed the consumers who prefer buying online, generally purchase shoes and clothes. As a boutique, Stelly should utilize these customer preferences. In case of advertising the products or specialization, digital marketing is the simplest and effective option for the online sellers. Considering all these facts supporting advantage of ICT in there is a fact noticeable, that the consumers tend to visit to a nearby physical store over online stores if there is similar price condition (Christopher 2017). It is because of delays in product delivery and experience the purchased product physically before buying. Recommendation: Stelly has its personal website where consumers have shop by category option like other internet service companies (stelly.com.au. 2017). They should keep try and return options where the customers can try the product at home and return if they do not like the product. They should also take care of maintaining their website and update fresh arrivals. Conclusion: From the above discussion it can be concluded that it is just the matter of time that technology it completely take over the physical stores. The integration of online and offline store is an inevitable step to survive. Stelly must utilize its website to increase its popularity and increase business. References: Blzquez, M., 2014. Computer Science Essays - Computer Engineering, Computer Science

Computer Science Computer Science Computer science is one of the fastest growing career fields in modern history. Dating back only a few decades to the late 1950s and early 1960s, it has become one of the leading industries in the world today. Developed through the technological architecture of electrical engineering and the computational language of mathematics, the science of computer technology has provided considerable recognition and financial gain for many of its well deserving pioneers. Originally conceived as an organizational solution to the massive amounts of information kept on nothing more than paper, computers have evolved and advanced to become a common part of modern day life. In the early days of the computers age, the newest and most complex computers took up no less than an entire building or very large room. It was inconceivable that these machines would after only about fifty years be many times more powerful and small enough to be held with tweezers [Gicenia, Mark W., pgs. 1-4]. With the introduction of miniature circuitry and transistors, the days of vacuum tubes and computers that filled entire buildings are long gone and the centerpiece of the today's computer industry is the CPU, one of the modern marvels of science and technology. It is essentially the brain of the computer and though it is the main determining factor in the processing power of the computer as a whole, many other parts of the machine are just as important in overall performance. Many people don't know this and that is how computer corporations have cheated people out of their money for so many years by selling them cheap systems with high megahertz numbers for the processors in them. This is one reason for the success of the computer industry. When people find out that they have been cheated, they will try to learn more about the product and probably end up spending more money next time. Either way the computer companies always win [Hoover, Warren D., pgs. 25-27]. A career in the field of computer science has been proven to be a worthwhile direction for any young enthusiast and this trend is looking just as bright in the new millennium. Computer science and technology has much to offer in anyone of its many career paths. Whether working with a large multinational corporation or a smaller private company on computer hardware or software in engineering or programming the possibilities and opportunities are endless and their increasing everyday. One reason the computer industry is so promising is that virtually every industry in the world depends on computers to operate. This creates an increasingly large and permanent demand for computer hardware, software, and the technical knowledge to create and use them [Vizard, Frank, pgs. 45-47]. Computer games have added to the development of computer science in recent years. The growing complexity of the most popular games and the ever so urgent need for the latest and fastest graphics processing hardware by gamers with the money to afford it has boosted the gaming industry to unbelievable status. Constantly advancing computer technology allows computer programmers the freedom to incorporate into their games and software, higher levels of visual detail, more complex game play, and amazing special effects that at one time were not conceivable because the technology to implement them didn't exist [O'Malley, Chris, pgs. 39-42]. Today the technical sophistication of computer hardware is advancing at an alarming rate due mainly to competition between major manufacturers. When two or more large hardware companies battle for the majority of the market, processing power soars and prices tumble. It always equals out to a better deal for the average consumer and more power for less money. That means both basic and high end machines become more affordable and that computers will populate more households. With that, computer technology and all its benefits are introduced to more people everyday making a career in computer science an evermore-popular choice for those interested. This not only promises a never ending demand computer products, but also the next generation of pioneers to lead us well into the new millennium [Epstein, George, pgs. 740-745]. Technology Essays

Antisocialism and J. Alfred Prufrock Essay Example

Antisocialism and J. Alfred Prufrock Essay Example Antisocialism and J. Alfred Prufrock Essay Antisocialism and J. Alfred Prufrock Essay Essay Topic: The Love Song Of J alfred Prufrock Men are well-known for their strength in confronting many different situations during their lifetime; however, men have feeling and sensations that might affect their life in a way or another. People are developing through time, but the main biological traits remain similar and will remain similar in future. As a conscious man Thomas Stearns Eliot, born on  September 26, 1888, is one of the twentieth centurys major poets who wrote â€Å"The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock.† It is a modernist poem that describes the poet unhappy life full of fear and boredom. The main character â€Å"Prufrock† is a person who understands values in life, but is unable to take decisive actions in the right time. A man who is overeducated, eloquent, and intelligent, but has fear of mental crisis upon the urban modern civilization. Many postmodern men -Twenty-First Century men- tend to be like a â€Å"Prufrock man† of the Twentieth Century as they suffer from depression, lack of com munication, and fear of aging or death. Anxiety and depression are considered a dominant negative factors that control most men’s life in the twenty first century. Unfortunately, postmodernism acts as a catalyst in spreading depression among people. According to a study conducted by the Office for National Statistics (ONS), back in 2000 mixed anxiety and depression affected an estimated 7 per cent of men, with depression affecting a further 2 per cent. Harsh living conditions and the great responsibility on men made depression even worse in the new complicated world. For example, men has to take care of their business, home duties, and keep up with the sophisticated life. â€Å"The dangerous mix of  technology and terrorism, the ongoing  poverty  and suffering of billions of our fellow humans, and the seeming inability of governments to respond to these significant issues and others, people find themselves losing faith in our collective future.†(Cohen Andrew). The Prufrock characte

Snow White Movie Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 3000 words

Snow White Movie - Essay Example There are differences, in that the heroine in this effort is passive, a bit stupid and disloyal. This is in contrast to later heroines, in particular Belle from Beauty and the Beast. These are just a few of the similarities and differences between the early efforts put forth by Disney and the later ones. This paper will examine these similarities and differences, as well as many more. Discussion The imagery surrounding Snow White is considerably different than the imagery surrounding princesses in later Disney incarnations. The first, considerable difference between this animated feature and later features, such as The Little Mermaid is that the animals are less anthromorphized in this feature than in later ones, and the inanimate objects do not come to life, as they do in later features. For instance, in this feature, the animals do not talk. Thus, there is no talking, singing crab like in The Little Mermaid, and the dishes do not come to life and sing, such as in Beauty and the Beast. This aspect gave the movie a bit less of a fantasy quality than later movies, and lent a slightly more believable air to the proceedings. The story could have possibly happened in real life, except that the animals would not be as accommodating as they were in the feature, and, of course, the magic pr acticed by the Evil Queen would not be possible. But, since the animals and inanimate objects stay mute, the cartoon is not as much in the realm of the fantastic as the later Disney efforts. Because the animals did not talk, nor did the inanimate objects, the feature also seemed to be missing much of the humor which marked the later efforts. Some of the funnier characters in Disney films were the different animals that populate the worlds – such as the crows in Dumbo and Thomas O’Malley Scat Cat friends in The Aristocats. Another aspect to these characters, specifically the crows in Dumbo and O’Malley’s friends in The Aristocats is that these characters were unmistakably based upon African-Americans. The crab in The Little Mermaid was unmistakably Hispanic. In this way, the later features were able to subtly introduce characters of color, even though the main characters were white, or, as in the case of The Aristocats and Dumbo, animals who are based upon Caucasians. Snow White did not have any characters whom were indisputably based upon different ethnicities, as could have been the case had the animators decided to inject a few animal characters into the story, therefore the story is considerably less multi-cultural then later efforts by the studio. Another curious aspect of the story was the way that the dwarfs were introduced and handled. When the dwarfs were first seen in the diamond mine, and in their trek to their home, they were indistinguishable from one another, for the most part. The exceptions to this were Doc, who was set apart by the fact that he wore glasses; Dopey, who was set apart because he was bald and had no facial hair; and Grumpy, who was well-defined from the beginning as a grump, therefore he stood out. The others did not embody their respective names – Happy, Sneezy, Bashful and Sleepy. It would have been more effective if the viewer could have more of an introduction to these dwarfs to show exactly why and how they got their name. For instance, if Sneezy would have been sneezing in the mine and on the way home, he would have been more easily distinguished from the others. If Happy would have been seen doing a â€Å"happy dance,† then he would have been better defined. If Bashful would have been turning red early on, the viewer would have known who he was. And, if Sleepy would have been

Nikes Strategic Management Assignment Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 3250 words

Nikes Strategic Management - Assignment Example The intention of this study is Nike Incorporation as world leader in designing, developing and worldwide distribution and marketing of sports equipment, ranging from athletic footwear, athletic clothing lines, sports equipment and accessories. Nike’s main focus is on markets where the political environments are relatively stable and democracy flourishes. Nike’s main markets are considered to be USA, European Countries, developing countries of Asia, South Africa and few countries of North and South America. Usually, in these countries, the government has been elected through a general election. The economic conditions in these countries are relatively stable and favorable for businesses, despite of the economic slowdown experience in rest of the world. These political conditions provide a competitive advantage to Nike as it does not have to face the adverse effects of economic fluctuations and fluctuations in exchange rates. The policies regarding the interest rates and other monitory responsibilities are made keeping in view the requirements of the businesses, therefore; it becomes easier for Nike to utilize the disposable income in a more productive way. Although, the political scenario seems to b e favorable for Nike, but within governments, there are certain groups and lobbies that put pressure on authorities to ban the methodologies used by Nike for producing and marketing its products. Nike also needs to consider the subsidies it might get from the Government as it can be helpful for the company to setup its factories in these countries and import goods into the respective countries. ... Economic Conditions In most of the countries, where Nike sells its products, economic conditions are either getting improved or they have already flourished or target customers’ purchasing power is improving on a regular basis. Especially in European countries and USA, Nike’s products are considered to be reliable and durable and purchased by customers on regular basis due to their ever increasing purchasing power and better economic conditions. Also, sports are considered to be an essential part of an individual’s life in these countries which helps Nike to sell more units of its products in a year as compare to the previous year (Petkova and Pattabiraman 2010). Social Being a USA based multinational company, Nike is widely accepted as a brand in USA and European countries, but at the same time, Nike faces criticism and neglected to be accepted by the society in some Asian and South and North American countries. For catering this strategic problem, Nike designs different products for every region of the world and markets the products according to the societal norms and values. These products are designed keeping in view the local customers’ buying behavior, their culture, the society in which they live and the attributes of sports equipment that these customers look for. Lifestyle also plays a pivotal role in Nike’s decision regarding designing a product. Majority of the markets that Nike caters, have a social background where sports events are paid especial attention, which implies that the purchasing of sports equipments is higher in these countries or markets (Mishra 2010). Technological Nike utilizes latest technology for manufacturing

Order Management Reengineering At Heatway

Order Management Reengineering At Heatway Heatway Systems lost a lengthy legal battle when a federal jury in Cleveland held Goodyear Tire Rubber Co. blameless for its role in manufacturing the rubber hose the radiant company marketed as Entran II. The jury reached its decision February 3 after three days of deliberation and after three weeks of testimony. Frankly, the outcome of this trial was a surprise to everyone-including Goodyear, if they were honest, Heatway president Mike Chiles said the day after the verdict. Chiles had high praise for the evidence presented by his Cleveland legal team. During three days of testimony, for example, an expert witness from the Naval Research Laboratory pointed out that Goodyear used inadequate antioxidants, inappropriate volatile plasticizers and cheap clay fillers in making the hose. A second expert witness testified that Goodyears failure to properly test the Entran II product for radiant heat purposes led to the problems. Meanwhile, mechanical contractors from Colorado and Alaska testified that they had employed exactly the same installation methods when installing Heatways other radiant brands-yet only experienced problems with Entran II hose. Goodyear argued that the failures were due to Heatways radiant system design, as well as problems with installation and maintenance by contractors. It said that field inspections showed that leaks were caused by the wrong type of hose connectors and that the hose was damaged by highly acidic fluid. In addition, Goodyear said it had been using the same 20-year-old formula to make hose for other applications, such as air and water hose, without any problems. In a statement about the jurys decision, Goodyear says it is obviously very gratified by the verdict. We always have believed that the Entran II hose was appropriate for use in radiant home heating systems when it was sold. Chiles said the numbers just didnt add up for his side. The jury looked at the fact that there had only been 658 cases of failure out of 10,000 installations, he said, and didnt think that was a high enough failure rate. After the verdict, Chiles said his lawyers interviewed the jury and many expressed the sentiment that if there had been two or three times as many cases of failure, we would have won. While Heatway lost this case, Goodyears win may be far from solid. Theyre not out of the woods at all, Chiles said. We have unearthed some ugly internal memos as a result of our discovery process. Its our firm belief that Goodyear will pay for this problem-its just going to take a couple of more years and more litigation. Chiles added that the courtroom was packed with plaintiff attorneys from across the country who are in line to sue Goodyear next. Heatway failed on its claim of a breach of implied warranty of merchantability. However, Goodyear still faces a growing number of homeowner claims and will have to fight other legal theories of liability. Heatway bought 25 million feet of the hose between 1989 and 1993. But the hose soon began to crack and leak, causing extensive damages. Entran II tubes started out orange and flexible, like garden hoses. Over time, the tube released plasticizers that hardened the tube, effectively dissolving in hot water, according to expert testimony. The first phase of the problem begins with leaks where the hose connects to the manifold, and continues until the tube spontaneously cracks and leaks elsewhere. There are about 10,000 radiant heating systems in the Unites States that contain Entran II tubes, and Heatway has spent more than $6.5 million to settle more than 100 claims since 1992. Despite the verdict against Heatway, Denver attorney William Maywhort has advised clients that the Ohio jury verdict for Goodyear does not prevent Colorado residents who have Entran II hose in their homes from suing Goodyear. In fact, suing Goodyear and Heatway directly now may be the homeowners only option for recovering for the damage caused by Entran II, said Maywhort, who represents more than a dozen Colorado homeowners who have experienced problems with the Entran II hose What is BPR? Business process re-engineering is a business management strategy, originally pioneered in the early 1990s, focusing on the analysis and design of workflows and processes within an organization. BPR aimed to help organizations fundamentally rethink how they do their work in order to dramatically improve customer service, cut operational costs, and become world-class competitors. In the mid-1990s, as many as 60% of the Fortune 500 companies claimed to either have initiated reengineering efforts, or to have plans to do so. BPR seeks to help companies radically restructure their organizations by focusing on the ground-up design of their business processes. According to Davenport (1990) a business process is a set of logically related tasks performed to achieve a defined business outcome. Re-engineering emphasized a holistic focus on business objectives and how processes related to them, encouraging full-scale recreation of processes rather than iterative optimization of subprocesses. Business process re-engineering is also known as business process redesign, business transformation, or business process change management. The role of information technology Information technology (IT) has historically played an important role in the reengineering concept. It is considered by some as a major enabler for new forms of working and collaborating within an organization and across organizational borders[citation needed]. Early BPR literature identified several so called disruptive technologies that were supposed to challenge traditional wisdom about how work should be performed. Shared databases, making information available at many places Expert systems, allowing generalists to perform specialist tasks Telecommunication networks, allowing organizations to be centralized and decentralized at the same time Decision-support tools, allowing decision-making to be a part of everybodys job Wireless data communication and portable computers, allowing field personnel to work office independent Interactive videodisk, to get in immediate contact with potential buyers Automatic identification and tracking, allowing things to tell where they are, instead of requiring to be found High performance computing, allowing on-the-fly planning and revisioning In the mid-1990s, especially workflow management systems were considered as a significant contributor to improved process efficiency. Also ERP (Enterprise Resource Planning) vendors, such as SAP, JD Edwards, Oracle, PeopleSoft, positioned their solutions as vehicles for business process redesign and improvement. BPR Success Failure Factors Critique Many companies used reengineering as an pretext to downsize their companies dramatically, though this was not the intent of reengineerings proponents; consequently, reengineering earned a reputation for being synonymous with downsizing and layoffs. In many circumstances, reengineering has not always lived up to its expectations. Some prominent reasons include: Reengineering assumes that the factor that limits an organizations performance is the ineffectiveness of its processes (which may or may not be true) and offers no means of validating that assumption. Reengineering assumes the need to start the process of performance improvement with a clean slate, i.e. totally disregard the status quo. According to Eliyahu M. Goldratt (and his Theory of Constraints) reengineering does not provide an effective way to focus improvement efforts on the organizations constraint[citation needed]. Others have claimed that reengineering was a recycled buzzword for commonly-held ideas. Abrahamson (1996) argued that fashionable management terms tend to follow a lifecycle, which for Reengineering peaked between 1993 and 1996 (Ponzi and Koenig 2002). They argue that Reengineering was in fact nothing new (as e.g. when Henry Ford implemented the assembly line in 1908, he was in fact reengineering, radically changing the way of thinking in an organization). The most frequent critique against BPR concerns the strict focus on efficiency and technology and the disregard of people in the organization that is subjected to a reengineering initiative. Very often, the label BPR was used for major workforce reductions. Thomas Davenport, an early BPR proponent, stated that: When I wrote about business process redesign in 1990, I explicitly said that using it for cost reduction alone was not a sensible goal. And consultants Michael Hammer and James Champy, the two names most closely associated with reengineering, have insisted all along that layoffs shouldnt be the point. But the fact is, once out of the bottle, the reengineering genie quickly turned ugly. Introduction to Case Problem before Allan Firestone, president of Heatway Cooperationà ¢Ãƒ ¢Ã¢â‚¬Å¡Ã‚ ¬Ãƒ ¢Ã¢â‚¬Å¾Ã‚ ¢s Industrial Products Division and Bob Hemphill, a VP charged with designing and implementing a new process. Design and implementation of a new process, named Proposal to payment (PTP) for selling and delivering Heatway products. Change in organizational structure as well as IT architecture, and even a new philosophy of business. Trouble between Hemphill and Firestone over the spending budget, where Hemphill demanded $35 million and Firestone was ready to spend only $15 million. Funding Considerations before Firestone: How money could be arranged for PTP without sacrificing the profit objectives? Could corporate pay for the rest of amount? Could some of the other international divisions that had expressed interest contribute? Firestone himself believed that PTP was necessary and design for the new process, organization, and technology environment were very exciting. But, the VP had doubts about the urgency to implement PTP. So, firestone resolved to take one more look at the numbers, in hope to find some source of additional savings had been overlooked. Reorganization could have been problematic for PTP European groups would have less incentive to adopt the PTP design. Want of new system provider to implement SAP without concern of PTP process vision Concerns Firestone concern Difficulty in assessing how rapidly the construction and rollout of PTP capabilities should take place. Other memebers of the operations committee were neither worried nor committed to PTP. Change in the commitment by the key managers after t He reorganization. These are those managers whose functional areas would shrink with the adoption of PTP despite being offered important role at Heatway. Financing for PTP If all the resources are devoted then both revenue and profitability goals would not meet. Decisions Everyone understood that PTP implementation is a good investment. Head of international said she wanted to wait to see how PTP worked in the U.S. before transferring resources from her budget. Friestone tried unsucessfully at one one meeting to make PTP corporate initiative. Its upto firestone and other executives to decide how quickly to roll out the new process and how to fund it
